HOUSTON — For the first time ever, Texas restaurants will be honored with the most coveted awards in the dining business at the state’s inaugural Michelin Guide ceremony in Houston.

The ceremony is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 11, with venue details still under wraps.

The Michelin Guide announced earlier this year it would be making its Texas debut for the first time. Restaurants in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Fort Worth are eligible to receive honors from the French tire company that introduced its guide in the early 1900s.

Previously, only New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., California and Florida had a Michelin Guide in the U.S.

As for why Michelin chose Houston to host the ceremony, its “dynamic” food scene is to thank.

“With one of the United States' most dynamic food scenes boasting world-class dining, Houston proved to be the perfect fit for the first MICHELIN Guide Texas Ceremony,” the Michelin Guide’s website reads.

“We are delighted to be hosting the inaugural MICHELIN Guide Texas Ceremony in the vibrant city of Houston,” said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of The MICHELIN Guides. “Houston is full of culinary innovation and world-class hospitality, which goes hand in hand with our values at The MICHELIN Guide. Together with Houston First, as well as the support of Travel Texas, we look forward to an evening of celebration as we toast to the restaurants that our Inspectors have chosen to award in Texas.”

Houston First and Travel Texas both partnered with the Michelin Guide and helped bring it to the Lone Star State.

As the most diverse large city in the U.S., Houston has an abundance of options when it comes to gastronomy. According to Michael Heckman, president and CEO Of Houston First, Houston is home to over 10,000 restaurants.

Apart from the Michelin Star, Texas restaurants also have the chance to be honored with a Bib Gourmand or a Green Star. The Bib Gourmand is awarded to restaurants that offer exceptional food at an affordable price, while the Green Star honors restaurants that exemplify sustainability in the industry.
