Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump took to the debate stage on Tuesday evening, and Texas lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have taken to social media to share their thoughts on how the night played out.

Gov. Greg Abbott said Harris “proved that now more than ever, we need to elect President Donald Trump.”

Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett shared her thoughts on the debate in real time in a thread posted to X, formerly Twitter, calling Trump “Putin’s puppet” and later calling him insane.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo in a post on X sarcastically shared Trump’s baseless claims about immigrants eating cats with the hashtag #TruthMatters. Trump and other Republicans spread the claim on social media this week.

Republican Texas Rep. Chip Roy called the world “safer” under Trump’s presidency and criticized Harris.

Democratic state Sen. Sarah Eckhardt signaled support for Harris after the debate, posting the phrase “we are not going back,” the slogan for the Harris campaign.

Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, on the other hand, took to his podcast, “Verdict with Ted Cruz," to elaborate on his thoughts on the debate, criticizing the use of fact checking for Trump.

“The ABC moderators did not do a good job [in] that they clearly were biased towards Kamala Harris. We saw that from their live quote fact checking, where repeatedly they'd follow up what Trump said by contradicting him, by disputing him. Many instances their fact checks were wrong and they never never could be bothered [to] fact check a word that came out of Kamala Harris' mouth.”

He also touched on immigration, claiming that Harris is responsible for the influx of migrants crossing the border and crimes committed by undocumented individuals.

“Look, the critical thing that we saw tonight is she doesn't have a good answer on the chaos at our southern border. Kamala Harris was the border czar. She is directly responsible for the worst level of illegal immigration in our nation's history,” Cruz said. “She is directly responsible for the people who have died. Eight hundred and fifty three migrants died last year crossing illegally in this country. She is responsible for the people, the women who have been brutally raped. She's responsible for the children who have been brutalized. She's responsible for the little boys and little girls who've been horribly assaulted by human traffickers.”
