The Bexar County Commissioners Court on Tuesday voted 3-1 in favor of hiring third-party company Civic Government Solutions to print and mail voter registration forms to unregistered residents in the county.

In a statement on Wednesday, Paxton called the decision by the court unlawful and said it could potentially invite election fraud.

“Despite being warned against adopting this blatantly illegal program that would spend taxpayer dollars to mail registration applications to potentially ineligible voters, Bexar County has irresponsibly chosen to violate the law,” Paxton said. “This program is completely unlawful and potentially invites election fraud. It is a crime to register to vote if you are ineligible.”

Paxton said the distribution of the voter registration forms “could induce ineligible people — such as felons and noncitizens — to commit a crime by attempting to register to vote.”

The attorney general also sent a letter warning Harris County against adopting a similar measure.

Paxton’s office is currently leading an investigation into alleged election fraud in Texas.
