TEXAS — Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, on Wednesday announced that she has been appointed a national co-chair for the campaign of Vice President Kamala Haris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
The outspoken Texas Democrat is coming off a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago last week during which she referred to former President Donald Trump as a “career criminal.”
“Kamala Harris has a résumé. Donald Trump has a rap sheet. She presides over the Senate, while he keeps national secrets next to his thinking chair — y’all know what I said the other time — in Mar-A-Lago,” Crockett said.
Harris was the first Texan to speak on the DNC main stage.
A freshman member of the U.S. House, Crockett ran for the office following one term in the Texas House. Beginning her career in the Bowie County Public Defender's Office, Crockett “worked tirelessly to keep children safe and out of jail. Her time there serves as a reminder that criminal justice is an intersectional issue,” according to her official bio.
Crockett won the seat previously held by former Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson in Texas’ 30th District and identifies fighting for health care access, voting rights and economic opportunity among her goals.
According to a poll released last week by the University of Houston and Texas Southern University, Harris trails Trump 49.5% to 44.6% in Texas.
