AUSTIN, Texas — Ego’s, which has operated on South Congress Avenue in Austin since 1979, announced on social media that it is likely closing.

The bar, which has been described as the destination for “relaxed drinking and high-energy karaoke,” has announced that they will remain open at least through the end of August.

What You Need To Know

  • The operators of Ego's, a karaoke bar located in downtown Austin, announced in a social media post that the longtime business is likely closing

  • Located on South Congress Avenue, the bar has been locally owned and operated since 1979

  • The bar's operators said issues with pipes are ongoing, it's the last remaining business in the building and the building will likely be demolished

  • There are hopes that Ego's could reopen in a different building

The operators said that the pipes in the facility are continuously collapsing, it is the last remaining business in the downtown Austin building, and at some point the building will likely be demolished.

“Alright, Y’all, We’re gonna be real with you. It’s not looking like Ego’s is going to be open much longer. Right now we’re taking it day by day while we wait to see if the landlord is willing to fix all of the pipes that keep collapsing, but it’s not looking good since they plan on demoing the building at some point anyway and we’re the only business left in that building. If that’s the case, we’ll definitely do one last big hurrah, so stay tuned to Ego’s socials for updates,” the post on Facebook reads.

The Ego’s crew said the intention is to relocate the business to another building, but plans remain tentative.

“This is an extremely emotional and hard time for everyone who loves this bar, especially the staff, so please keep that in mind when you come in by being kind and limiting questions. We promise that we’re not hiding anything, and we will keep you as updated as we are,” the post continues.

Besides karaoke, the bar offers video games, pool and pinball.
