SAN ANTONIO —  A 20-year-old San Antonio sheriff’s deputy died in a wrong-way car crash Sunday morning, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said.

“It is with great sadness to report that Deputy Meredith Portillo, 20, lost her life earlier this morning as a result of a fatal accident involving a suspected wrong way driver along IH-37 S and Donop Rd in South Bexar County,” the department said in a post on Facebook honoring Portillo. 

Portillo was off duty, driving south of San Antonio when she was struck by another car, which was driving the wrong way. 

Portillo and another person in her car were killed on impact, along with the driver of the other vehicle. Another passenger in the car with Portillo was seriously injured. 

The sheriff’s office said Portillo started with the department back in September 2023 when she was 19. She graduated from the detention academy back in January and was “at the beginning of her career.”

“At this time our thoughts and prayers remain with the Portillo Family. Funeral arrangements are forthcoming and will be announced when they become available,” the department’s Facebook post said.
