While promoting his new movie “Twisters,” which comes out July 19, Powell announced he will finish up his degree at the University of Texas - Austin.

Powell, a self-proclaimed die-hard Longhorn fan, told IndieWire that he would finish the final two credits he needs to complete his degree in Spanish and early American History virtually while on set across the pond.

“I’m not going to be sitting in a class with other students on the regular. I’m basically going to be coming back because I have to finish up, but I’m going to be shooting ‘The Running Man’ in the fall,” Powell told the IndieWire reporter. “So I’m going to be in London, but I am going to be going back for proctored exams. So, they’re letting me figure it out [with] distance learning.”

Powell went on to say that he will plan on making the commute from London to Austin two or three times during the semester for exams with the goal of graduating in the spring.

Despite not having his degree yet, the UT community has certainly embraced Powell. Last May, he gave the keynote address at Moody College of Communication’s graduation ceremony. The university posted on X, formerly Twitter, that it’s excited to welcome the actor back to campus.

And Powell is not only returning to Austin for school, but he has also made the Live Music Capital of the World his home base.

During an interview with Today with Hoda & Jenna, Powell had nothing but nice things to say about his hometown. He said his decision to move from Los Angeles back to Austin came out of instinct and was the “best decision” he has made.

“I kind of started feeling like LA wasn’t making me feel like me as much anymore, and Austin and my family has always made me feel like me,” Powell said.
