AUSTIN, Texas — Police with the University of Texas at Austin have charged a San Marcos man with illegally carrying a firearm during a pro-Palestinian protest on April 29, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

Michael David Maule is accused of not having a license to carry the weapon on campus. Officers searched Maule and found the gun in his waistband against his back, according to an affidavit. Maule also had two magazines in his pocket and a pocket knife.

Maule was arrested on a criminal trespassing charge and faces a third-degree felony charge of "places weapons prohibited." It’s the only pending felony charge to come from the recent pro-Palestinian protests at UT.

Police arrested over 100 people during protests that took place on April 24 and April 29.

According to UT’s campus carry rules, carrying a concealed weapon is permitted on campus if the person has a license to carry, is 21 or older and clears a background check for history on criminal records, mental health and substance abuse issues. Concealed carry on campus is "generally" allowed in outdoor areas, according to the university. The rules are in accordance with Gov. Greg Abbott’s campus carry law, SB 11, which was signed in 2015.

In an April 30 statement from UT, university officials said other weapons have been confiscated from protesters, including “guns, buckets of large rocks, bricks, steel enforced wood planks, mallets, and chains.”
