TEMPLE, Texas — Two people are dead after a collision in Temple on Saturday involving a trailer hauling an oversized load that crushed a small vehicle.

Crews responded at around 11:20 a.m. to reports of a crash on State Highway 36 in Temple, located south of Waco.

According to Temple Fire & Rescue, crews found that the trailer’s load had come off of the trailer, pinning a car underneath it. The load weighed about 350,000 pounds, or 175 tons. It's unclear what piece of equipment was being hauled.

Three passengers were inside the car. Two had fatal injuries and one was rescued from the vehicle and flown to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. It took about four hours to safely rescue the surviving passenger from the vehicle.

Emergency responders from Georgetown, Belton and Killeen also assisted with rescue efforts.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
