AUSTIN, Texas — After a historic protest at the University of Texas at Austin where state troopers arrested dozens of pro-Palestinian activists, students on Monday, April 29 will protest Senate Bill 17, a statewide ban on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, at the university.

The rally, organized by the Texas State Employees Union (TSEU), was originally scheduled for Thursday, April 25 but was later postponed.

"The Texas State Employees Union cedes the space and time today at 12:15 on the West Mall to Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine to discuss the events yesterday," the TSEU wrote in a post to Instagram. "We do not condone the arrests and actions of State Troopers on our campus during a peaceful protest."

On April 2, the university fired approximately 60 employees who previously held DEI-related roles, and offices are expected to close by May 31 to comply with the ban, which went into effect on Jan. 1.

It’s not the first DEI ban protest students have organized. On April 15, approximately 200 students disrupted a virtual faculty meeting held by university president Jay Hartzell to oppose the university’s decision to lay off staff members. Students turned their cameras off, and a black screen with the words “No DEI = Not Our Texas” was visible during the meeting.

Monday's protest will be held on the campus’ main mall in front of the UT tower at 12:15 p.m.
