CapMetro will unveil a mosaic mural at the newly opened McKalla Station near Q2 Stadium on April 6. The mural is inspired by the energy of Austin FC support groups and features portraits of CapMetro frontline staff.

The mural, titled “The Heartbeat of Austin,” was designed by Austin artist J Muzacz. Muzacz runs The Mosaic Workshop in Austin, a space dedicated to teaching the art of mosaics and creating community-led murals.

Several other local artists and over 200 community volunteers worked to put together the tiles and install them at the station. It’s what Muzcacz calls “a testimony to the collective power of a community to rally around a common shared vision.”

Austin FC has several supporter groups that bring energy to each game and fire up the crowds, including La Murga de Austin, Los Verdes and Austin Anthem.

“If you’ve ever been to an Austin FC game, you’ve probably seen La Murga and all the other dedicated and passionate Los Verdes Supporter Groups. This monumental mosaic mural is inspired by their electric community and commitment to uplifting Austin,” a statement on Muzcacz’s website reads.

The mural is made up of more than 100,000 glass tiles and required over 500 pounds of grout to put together.

It will be unveiled on the Delta Drive side of McKalla Station from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. before Saturday’s game against San Jose. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.

McKalla Station opened back in February to give visitors a way to conveniently get to Austin FC games and other events at Q2 Stadium while minimizing traffic.
