MESQUITE, Texas — A student who brought a gun to a Mesquite charter school on Monday morning was shot by police and is recovering in a hospital, the Mesquite Police Department reported.

The department said officers were summoned to Pioneer Technology & Arts Academy about 8:49 a.m. The call was then changed to an active shooter call.

It was determined that the student had entered the school with a gun. Officers attempted to negotiate with the armed person, the department said.

During negotiations, one or more officers fired on the armed student. No other students or staff members were injured.

The student was injured by gunfire, then transported to a local area hospital in stable condition. The suspect was identified as a 16-year-old student from the campus, and his identity is being withheld due to his juvenile status.

A reunification center was set up at Northside Baptist Church, located at 3130 Moon Drive in Mesquite.

Pioneer on Monday afternoon issued a statement that clarified that the person who brought a gun on campus is a student and that the incident occurred at the Oates Campus.

"The safety and security of our students and staff are our highest priorities at Pioneer Technology & Arts Academy. We have rigorous safety protocols in place to handle such incidents effectively and efficiently to ensure the well-being of our school community," the statement reads. "Today, those procedures were tested, and they worked as intended."
