AUSTIN, Texas — Approximately 73,000 undergraduate students applied to The University of Texas at Austin for fall 2024, the university reports.
The application numbers are record-breaking for the UT System's flagship school. It's a 20% jump from previous years, according to College Match Point.
UT is ranked No. 9 in the U.S. News & World report's list of Top Public Schools, National Universities, joining a list of top 10 schools nationwide that includes the University of California - Berkeley and the University of North Carolina.
Admission to UT is already highly competitive, especially now that more students than before are trying to get their foot in the door. And it's even more challenging for out-of-state students to get admitted to the school.
According to the state, UT has a policy of automatically admitting high school students who are in the top 6% of their class upon graduating. This makes up 75% of the freshmen class each year. The remaining 25% of students includes in-state students, transfer and out-of-state students. They are evaluated via a holistic review process.
According to College Match Point, non-automatic admission acceptance rates plummeted to 11% this application cycle. The website recommends that out-of-state students planning on applying to UT enroll in the most challenging courses they can succeed in and engage in activities related to their desired major.
UT admitted 42,444 undergraduate students in the fall of 2023. Data for fall 2024 admissions will be available in September.
