NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Do you know the game, Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon? Well, for some Central Texans, you’ll only be one degree of separation from Kevin Bacon this weekend.
Kevin Bacon and his brother Michael Bacon, who make up the band The Bacon Brothers, will be performing Friday, Jan. 19, at the historic Gruene Hall, which just so happens to be featured in their recent song, “Ballad of the Brothers (The Willie Door).”
Both brothers have made a name for themselves separately, Kevin Bacon as an award-winning actor and Michael Bacon as an Emmy-winning composer, but together, they form a multiple-genre band. The band was created in 1995 and released their debut album, "Forosoco," in 1997.
Although the brothers are from Philadelphia, Texas has influenced their music, and they’ve performed at Gruene Hall a number of times.
The brothers sat down with the San Antonio Current recently to talk about their affinity for Texas and their newest song featuring Gruene Hall. Michael Bacon told the reporter that the idea of writing the song came from playing at the dance hall seven or eight times.
“There's something about Texas that I find really fascinating. It's a little like Long Island,” said Michael Bacon to the San Antonio Current reporter. “It's this very large place that doesn't really care what anybody thinks about it.”
Gruene Hall, which is located in New Braunfels, is Texas’ oldest continually operating dance hall. It was built in 1878 and still features the original layout.
One of the features of the hall, which is highlighted in The Bacon Brothers’ newest song, is the Willie Door, named for one of Texas’ most iconic musicians, Willie Nelson. Gruene Hall only has one entrance, so there was no backstage door for performers to enter back in the day. When Nelson was set to perform for a packed house at the benefit concert, they had to transform a window flap next to the stage into a “door” and put make-shift stairs outside. Thus, the Willie Door was born.
“A person watching a show never knows if the artist they see at the Hall today will be a star tomorrow, but they can know that the music they hear will always be top notch,” the dance hall’s website said.
Unfortunately, tickets are sold out for The Bacon Brothers’ concert, but for people lucky enough to have snagged a spot, doors open at 7 p.m. The opener, Cindy Alexander, goes on at 8 p.m., and the Bacon Brothers will take the stage at 9 p.m.
Their new album, "Ballad Of The Brothers," will be released in April, but the title track is available for listening now.
