The Cowboy Breakfast Foundation Board of Directors announced in a Facebook post Wednesday that it will no longer be hosting its annual breakfast due to rising food costs.

“We regret not being able to serve our community any further, but the costs of putting on this FREE breakfast has skyrocketed, and we are unable to continue,” the board wrote.

The post said the volunteer-driven breakfast has raised more than $250,000 for scholarships for more than 159 students at the School of Culinary Arts at St. Philip’s College and prepared over a million tacos for the community.

“Thank you San Antonio, we are honored to have been a part of your history,” the board said. “The friends and partners we have created over the years have been fantastic and we couldn't have done this without them.”

But the spirit of the event will continue with the inaugural San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Cowboy Breakfast on Jan. 26.

"This event will help kick off our Bar-B-Que Cook-Off weekend, so bring your family and friends to enjoy a hot breakfast," rodeo officials said.

The last time the full, large-scale Cowboy Breakfast was hosted was January 2020. The event last year was canceled due to costs and the group not meeting fundraising goals, and in 2022, the group held a smaller event for San Antonio firefighters and police officers. In 2021, the event was scaled down because of COVID-19 restrictions, so the group delivered breakfast to community members in need.

According to the post, the breakfast has served over 300,000 biscuits and gravy, more than 300,000 sweet rolls and over 10,000 gallons of coffee to the San Antonio community.
