DALLAS — It’s a sad time at the Dallas Zoo following the euthanization of 15-year-old giraffe, Ferrell.
During a surgery, it was discovered that Ferrell had sustained a jaw injury after suffering a fall on Friday, according to a statement from the zoo’s social media. The veterinarian team discovered that Ferrell’s jaw was in array and, due to a giraffe’s size and anatomy, beyond repair.
The injury would ultimately impair Ferrell’s eating capabilities and use of his tongue, which ultimately led to the zoo’s decision to euthanize the giraffe on Sunday.
This was not Ferrell’s first health battle. The 15-year-old giraffe experienced a prior jaw injury 13 years ago that left him with no ability to use his tongue.
The newest injury caused so much damage that it would have left him nearly unable to eat, according to the statement.
With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of our 15-year-old giraffe, Ferrell. This sudden loss has left us all completely heartbroken. We kindly ask that you keep our staff in your thoughts as we navigate through this challenging time. pic.twitter.com/dXzmCu1JUr
