AUSTIN, Texas — Austin police during a news briefing on Tuesday went through a timeline of last week’s shootings that spanned from San Antonio to Austin.
The suspected shooter, 34-year-old Shane James, is accused of killing his parents, four others and injuring three.
According to police, on Dec. 5 around 11 a.m., police were called to Northeast College High School, where James shot an Austin ISD sergeant. The sergeant was able to drive himself to safety.
Police say an hour later in South Austin, James shot and killed Emmanuel Pop-Ba while attempting to steal his vehicle. Witnesses told police as James was driving away, he got out of the car and shot Sabrina Rahman, a witness who was hiding with her baby. She later died at the hospital. Her child wasn’t injured.
Hours later, a cyclist in southwest Austin was shot by someone he said was hiding in the bushes. The cyclist survived. After that, investigators said James broke into a nearby family’s home, which was captured on surveillance video. James killed mother and daughter Katherine and Lauren Short, then injured an Austin police detective outside the home. He then drove away in the family’s car.
James was later caught after a police chase.
After arresting James, court records show he asked investigators if they were able to get a hold of his parents. They told him officials in Bexar County were in the process of contacting them. Police said James smirked and said to “let him know the outcome of that.”
James has been charged with capital murder.
