TEXAS — A Texas man was sentenced on Nov. 3 for his involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. During the riot, Cappuccio yanked at a D.C. police officer’s gas mask in the lower west tunnel leading into the Capitol building.

Steven Cappuccio, of Universal City, Texas, was sentenced to 85 months in prison and was ordered to pay $2,000 in restitution by U.S. District Judge Trevor N. McFadden.

As Cappuccio ripped off Officer Daniel Hodges’ gas mask, he appeared to say, “How do you like me now, f—er?!” The rioter then took the officer’s baton out of his hands and used it to strike Hodges in the face. Steven later exited the tunnel, looked at the crowd, and pumped his fist into the air.

The officer had to seek medical attention after the attack. Footage of the attack on him in the Capitol tunnel played prominently in the Jan. 6 Committee’s public hearings.

Cappuccio, a veteran, blamed PTSD for his actions, but Hodges, also a veteran, refuted that claim in court.

Steven Cappuccio, convicted earlier this year, appeared in court in an orange jumpsuit. Federico Klein, Cappuccio’s co-defendant, received a six-year prison sentence for assaulting officers in the lower west tunnel.

The Capitol attack led to the arrest of more than 1,100 defendants, with over 400 receiving prison terms.
