WACO, Texas — It’s a snake with two heads, each of which has a mind of its own.

The Cameron Park Zoo recently announced that following a period of convalescence, its two-headed snake is again on display.

According to the zoo, which is in Waco, the rare western rat snake was discovered by a family in 2016. The snake, the zoo said, likely wouldn’t have survived long in the wild because it has two brains that often give its body conflicting commands, making its movements sporadic and uncoordinated.

The other issue is its neck can easily get stuck on branches, rocks and other obstacles.

That’s just what happened in February 2021. His left neck was injured, and it took until July of this year to heal.

The snake is currently being housed in the zoo’s freshwater aquarium building. His exhibit has few obstacles, minimizing the chances of another injury.
