SAN ANTONIO — It was a packed house at the AT&T center on NBA draft night and Sovia Lauriano, also known as the "Spurs Lady," was front and center.
“It’s Wemby time,” she said, pointing to her watch, which had a Victor Wembanyama photo on it.
She was there to see Wembanyama get drafted by the San Antonio Spurs as the first pick, which had the AT&T roaring like it was the 2014 NBA Finals again.
How was this 70-year-old woman crowned the "Spurs Lady," you might ask? It’s actually etched in history through San Antonio City Council, but it started when other Spurs fans gave her the prestigious title at games.
“Spurs Lady, we are talking to you.' I said, 'Me?' They said, ‘Yes, you are the Spurs Lady.’ I said, 'Oh, OK,' Lauriano said.
She has signed photos of dozens of NBA players. She even owns signed, game-worn sneakers and designs her own clothes to let it be known that she is puro Spurs.
“I go to funerals in Spurs (gear), I go to quinceañeras in Spurs, I go to weddings in Spurs,” Lauriano said.
The "Spurs Lady" even has Tony Parker’s rap album signed.
“I love my Tony, I love him,” she said.
She shares a birthday with Parker, May 17, but was given an early birthday gift on May 16 when the Spurs landed the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft.
“I was like, 'Oh my God, I got to go celebrate, I got to go celebrate,'” Lauriano said.
So she came to a “Wemby” mural created by artist Nik Soupe. It's located at Rudy’s Seafood on San Antonio’s Southside. It was there where she told Spectrum News 1 that’s she’s had a triple bypass surgery and flatlined four times.
“Right now my heart is only working at 45%, so he (the doctor) said you got to slow down,” Lauriano said. “I will one day.”
But for now, she says, she has new life thanks to Wembanyama. She waited five hours to get inside the doors of the AT&T Center for draft night, just to hear NBA commissioner Adam Silver make it official.
“With the first in the 2023 NBA draft the San Antonio Spurs select Victor Wembanyama,” Silver said as Spurs fans popped.
Lauriano was there to witness history and even has a little song to go with the moment.
“My heart is true. Oh Spurs, I love you, por vida, por (for) life,” Lauriano shouted. “Go Spurs Go! Wemby, Wemby, Wemby!”
