TEXAS — Before you toss your frozen fruits into the blender to make your smoothies this hot summer, you may want to check the brand. Williamette Valley Fruit Company has voluntarily issued a recall for select packages of frozen fruits grown in Mexico due to potential contamination of Hepatitis A.
These packages containing the strawberries have been sold at Walmart, HEB and Costco.
The products being recalled at Walmart include Great Value Sliced Strawberries, Great Value Mixed Fruit and Great Value Antioxidant Blend. The Rader Farms Organic Berry Trio packages that were distributed to HEBs in Texas from July 2022 through June 8, 2023, are being recalled, as well as the Rader Farms Organic Fresh Start Smoothie Blend that were distributed at Costco Wholesale stores in Colorado, Texas, California and Arizona between October of last year through June 8, 2023.
No illnesses have been associated with this voluntary recall. Consumers are asked to double check their freezers for the recalled product, and either discard it or return it to the store for a refund. Products outside the listed dates and brands are not being recalled at this time.
Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease that comes from exposure to the Hepatitis A virus. Illness, which occurs about 15-50 days after exposure, can be mild and last a few weeks or be serious and last several months. Symptoms include dark urine, pale stool, fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice and abnormal liver tests. In rare cases, a Hepatitis A infection could lead to liver failure. Anyone who may have consumed one of the recalled products is encouraged to visit a health care professional.
