HOUSTON — Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, said Sunday that she plans to enter the crowed race to be the next mayor of Houston, according to Spectrum News 1 partner the Texas Tribune.
The Houston Chronicle first reported that Jackson Lee made the announcement while speaking at City Cathedral Church in Houston.
"Sheila Jackson Lee wants to come home to be your mayor for the city of Houston. I will not be able to do it without each and every one of you,” said in a video.
Jackson has been a congresswoman since 1995 and prior to that was on Houston City Council.
Huston’s current mayor, Sylvester Turner, is termed out. Jackson Lee could still run for reelection to Congress if she were to lose the mayoral race in November.
Also running for mayor are former city councilwoman Amanda Edwards, current member Robert Gallegos, and state Sen. John Whitmire, among others.
The announcement comes at a time of great upheaval in Houston. Texas officials recently announced a state takeover of Houston’s nearly 200,000-student public school district, the eighth-largest in the country, acting on years of threats and angering Democrats who assailed the move as political.
