SAN ANTONIO — One San Antonian had a strange little friend waiting on his porch on Saturday morning.
The unfamiliar creature was clinging to the resident’s pillar of porch, terrified, until the resident called the proper authorities, according to the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services.
ACS was able to identify the furry creature as a coatis, an animal native to Central and South America. Rarely are these animals seen in South Texas, according to ACS.
Once ACS attempted to capture the coatis, the furry creature gave officers a good workout. Following a brisk sprint, officers were finally able to capture the animal.
Since coatis are wild animals, and often found in the illegal exotic animal trade, they are illegal to own in San Antonio and the state of Texas. Owning one could leave you with a fine up to $2,000.
The wild animal was loaded up and taken to ACS before transferring her into the care of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
