AUSTIN, Texas — A documentary following Vanessa Guillen’s family and their push for change to the way the military handles sexual assault will premiere on Netflix later this week.

I am Vanessa Guillen,” directed by Christy Wegener, premieres Nov. 17. In the trailer, Guillen’s family talks about her struggles at Fort Hood and the events before and after her disappearance and murder.

Vanessa Guillen disappeared in April 2020, and her body was eventually found July 2020. A military investigation into her death revealed a fellow soldier killed Guillen at Fort Hood. Investigators also found that she was sexually harassed, and that leaders failed to take action. The soldier accused of killing Guillen died by suicide following a confrontation with officers. A civilian faced charges for allegedly helping him dispose of Guillen’s remains.

Guillen’s family filed a lawsuit seeking $35 million in damages from the U.S. government. The hashtag #IamVanessaGuillen went viral on social media with accounts from current and former military members about their own sexual assault experiences in the military.

Congress eventually passed a bill named after her in an effort to revamp the way the military handles sexual assault cases.
