LLANO, Texas — Just off State Highway 16, about 10 miles from Llano, Texas, sits the Baby Head Cemetery. Some of the old gravestones have been toppled and weathered by time. The cemetery’s name is just as haunting as the story behind it. According to legend, a group of Native Americans killed a small child back in the 1800s. The community, including the cemetery, later adopted the name Baby Head.
“So, they put its head on a stake somewhere in the vicinity of Baby Head Mountain. And so, that’s the story,” said historian JoAnn McDougall.
McDougall grew up in the area. She says at one time the Baby Head community thrived.
“They had a blacksmith shop, a post office and some stores,” she said.
There was even a school named Baby Head. The community eventually disappeared and all that’s left is the cemetery, which includes the grave of another child.
“It’s supposedly the first baby buried out here. She was born May 14, 1881. Her little headstone is here among a lot of other things, memorabilia that someone has put out here,” said McDougall.
When people visit the cemetery, they can’t help but notice a few baby dolls placed on headstones. Some say there are also things at the cemetery you can’t see, at least with the naked eye.
“The paranormal people come out, investigate and do their thing, take pictures and see things. I have to laugh at some of that, but you know, I don’t think cemeteries are necessarily haunted,” said McDougall.
But she’s not taking any chances, either.
“I don’t ever come out to a cemetery at night!” she said.
