AUSTIN, Texas — Spinning the tunes at one Austin radio show means stepping back in time. Radio host Dennis Campa plays everything from the late 19th century to the 1970s.
“Everyone from Liberace to Muddy Waters, to Mel Blanc to the Velvet Underground and a whole lot more,” said Campa.
The music Campa plays on air comes from his own collection at home. His record albums and CDs fill several rooms.
“I always say between 15,000 and 20,000, but that’s just a guess. But I think it’s a good guess. It could be 15,000. It could be 20,000,” he said.
He started collecting more than 30 years ago thanks to another radio personality.
“I think what got me interested in it was the late 1980s hearing the 'Dr. Demento Show,'” said Campa.
Dr. Demento also collected old records and played vintage recordings on air. Campa was hooked.
“I was just looking for odd, old sounds and it’s never stopped. I think I could spend my whole life, never buy another record, and still not get to everything I have here,” said Campa.
Although he’s collected records for years, Campa says he won’t stop collecting soon.
“I’m almost 53 and I’m still interested and still want to find stuff and keep looking, you know? It never ends!” he said.
