TEXAS — It appears we’ll see Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and his Democratic challenger, Beto O’Rourke, square off in at least one debate ahead of the Nov. 8 election.

O’Rourke on Thursday announced he has accepted four invitations for town hall-style debates with his incumbent opponent, but Abbott has only agreed to participate in one.

That debate is set for Sept. 30 in the Rio Grande Valley. It is slated to be aired across the state by Nexstar Media Group. Nexstar owns television stations in Austin, El Paso and Waco, among numerous others.

Abbott’s communications director, Mark Miner, confirmed the governor’s participation in a statement Thursday.

"In between television appearances in New York and fundraising in Hollywood, we are pleased Beto O’ Rourke is taking the time to debate Governor Abbott in the only statewide televised debate, to be held in the Rio Grande Valley and hosted by Nexstar,” Miner wrote. “Beto has been debating himself on issues throughout the campaign, and we look forward to highlighting his real positions supporting open borders, defunding the police, raising property taxes, and extreme energy policies that will kill hundreds of thousands of jobs in Texas."

O’Rourke’s campaign took plenty of jabs at the governor in its news release Thursday.

“We are confident that Governor Abbott can make time for the people he is supposed to serve given that he is making time for his mega donors at more than 15 high-dollar fundraisers this fall. We are also certain he has time since he still refuses to call a special session and get to work preventing a seventh major mass shooting on his watch,” the release reads.
