FORT BEND, Texas — Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office deputies have arrested 47-year-old Samuel Cartwright in connection to the death of a 71-year-old Fresno, Texas, man.

The sheriff’s office, alongside Fort Bend Animal Control and Fort Bend County’s DA office, conducted an investigation this week into the death of Freddy Garcia, who was fatally attacked by Cartwright’s seven dogs. The attack happened July 18 in Fresno while Garcia was walking to a neighborhood store. He was mauled by seven dogs who were identified to be owned by Cartwright. All dogs are pit-bull mix and have been captured by animal control and deputies.

Cartwright is currently in Fort Bend County Jail with his bond set at $100,000. He has been charged with attack by dog resulting in death, a second-degree felony.

“This devastating tragedy didn’t have to happen. I extend my deepest condolences to the Garcia family and his neighbors as they adjust to the loss of Mr. Garcia,” Sheriff Eric Fagan said. “Special thanks go out to our deputies, Fort Bend Animal Services Director Rene Vasquez, and Fort Bend District Attorney Brian Middleton for the collaborative work of capturing the dogs and making an arrest.”
