TEXAS — Gas prices across the nation are setting records, and Texas is no exception. The current statewide gas price average for a gallon of unleaded fuel in the Lone Star State is $4.62, according to AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
This is the highest average price for Texas that AAA has ever tracked. This price is $1.88 more than what gas costs a year ago, and 28 cents more than this time last week.
Of the larger metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $4.88 per gallon, while those in Lubbock are paying the least on average at $4.40 per gallon. The average in Austin currently is $4.57, $4.70 in Dallas and $4.52 in San Antonio.
“With the national average almost at $5 a gallon, and the statewide average reaching a new record, drivers can expect to see higher prices for the next few weeks – if not months – as Russian oil is off the market for many countries due to its war in Ukraine,” said AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster. “The best way to improve your vehicle’s fuel economy is to practice safe driving habits and adhere to your automobile’s recommended maintenance schedule.”
The national gas price average as of Thursday is $4.97, 26 cents more than this time last week and nearly two dollars more than this time last year. Drivers in California are paying the most on average at $6.40 per gallon while those in Texas are paying the 10th lowest average prices in the country.
To save money, AAA has some tips on fuel efficiency.
- Slow down and drive the speed limit as high speeds cause more aerodynamic drag,
- Minimize use of air conditioning.
- Adjust your speed to time the traffic lights while driving through town so that you’re not repeatedly braking.
- Avoid “jackrabbit” starts and hard acceleration.
- Use cruise control on the highway.
- Avoid extended idling of your engine.
- Take your foot off the gas early as you approach red light and stop signs and allow your car to coast slowly to a stop.
