HOUSTON —  A shooting at a busy flea market in Houston Sunday afternoon left two people dead and at least three injured, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The shooting took place about 1 p.m. at 8729 Airline Drive in north Houston.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene and three were taken two hospitals. Their conditions weren’t immediately known.

The shooting at the open-air market arose from an “altercation” that involved at least two guns and all five of the people, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. He said no “innocent bystanders” were injured and that those killed and hurt all appeared to have been involved in that altercation.

Gonzalez said there were thousands of people at the flea market when the shooting took place. 

The sheriff said multiple shots were fired and that deputies recovered two pistols from the scene. Authorities did not immediately provide further information about what led to the shooting but said all the people involved were men in there 20s who appeared to know each other.

The shooting comes on the heels of a mass shooting at a Buffalo, New York, supermarket that claimed the lives of 10 people.
