AUSTIN, Texas — The first thing you need to do when we spring forward for daylight saving time on Sunday is check your clocks. The second thing is the batteries in your smoke alarms.

Austin Fire Department is reminding you that this is the perfect time check that your smoke alarm is working.

According to Austin Fire Department, almost 4,000 Americans die each year in residential fires. A working smoke alarm could double your chance of surviving by triggering an early warning to get out of the house.

The department has a free smoke alarm program which offers free alarms to any Austin resident in need. You must reside in a privately owned home, however.

There is also a free smoke alarm hotline where you can leave your information and they will get back to you to schedule an installation. That number is 512-974-0299.

You may also request a free home hazard assessment where the firefighters can check that your smoke alarms are operating correctly.
