DALLAS — Referring to the incident as “extremely disappointing,” Dallas ISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa just after 11 a.m. Thursday held a press conference to address the shooting of a student on a charter bus in San Antonio.

A student trainer was shot in the ankle Wednesday. The Kimball High School boy's basketball team was in town for the high school basketball championships.

Hinojosa said the gun might have gone off accidentally, but the exact circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.

“It appeared to be a random discharge of the weapon, but I have no idea. That’s for the investigators to flesh out,” Hinojosa said. “We can’t let this stain the entire team.”

San Antonio police took an 18-year-old student into custody in connection with the shooting.

The victim is said to be doing OK following surgery and is with her family in Dallas.

“This is extremely disappointing,” Hinojosa said. “This was at our own doing. There are no excuses for what happened last night.”

The shooting occurred outside a Northside ISD practice facility. The team had practiced and was leaving on the charter bus to go to dinner when the gun discharged. The injured student was taken to a nearby hospital.

Hinojosa said he was notified of the incident Thursday morning.

“I cannot comment on the student because of federal privacy acts,” he said. “There’s so much gun violence in America right now. We’ve been very fortunate to avoid these things in Dallas. But that gun should have never been with the students, let alone on a bus. If it’s one of our students, it’s not on the bus company to check, and that means it’s on us. That is unexplainable and inexcusable. So I think we need to have that responsibility. Your team should be people you trust. They’ve traveled all over the country together.”

The student who is believed to have been in possession of the gun is no longer with the team. The team will play on Thursday night.

Spectrum News 1 reached out to the University Scholastic League (UIL) regarding the incident and received the following statement:
