SAN ANTONIO — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York, known colloquially as AOC, made two campaign stops for progressive Texas congressional candidates over the weekend, telling a crowd at the first one that “Texas turning blue is inevitable.”

The congresswoman visited San Antonio on Saturday and Austin on Sunday in support of Greg Casar, who’s running for Texas’ 35^th District, as well as Jessica Cisneros, who’s vying for Texas’ 28^th District.

While in San Antonio, Ocasio-Cortez, according to a report from the San Antonio Express-News, told the crowd, “Texas turning blue is inevitable. It will happen. The only question is when.”

The San Antonio Express-News further reported that more than 1,000 people turned out Saturday for the rally at Paper Tiger, a live music venue. About 100 protesters showed up as well, some of whom waved American flags, Donald Trump flags and signs reading “Keep Texas Red.”

Casar is running for the seat currently occupied by Rep. Lloyd Doggett. Doggett last year announced he will seek office in the newly drawn 37th congressional district in Austin.

Casar is a progressive, an organizer and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America who skews left of the national Democratic Party.

Cisneros is running against Rep. Henry Cuellar. Cuellar, one of the more conservative Democrats, is under a great deal of scrutiny after FBI agents in January searched his home and campaign headquarters.

Ocasio-Cortez is among the most progressive members of Congress and possibly the most talked about. Her surprise 2018 defeat of powerful Rep. Joseph Crowley in a primary led many young Democrats to embrace her as an underdog. She is also frequently a target of Republicans who characterize her as emblematic of the more extreme tendencies of the Democratic Party.
