BOSQUE COUNTY, Texas — The search of a Texas lake in connection to a man who went missing 13 years ago didn’t yield the intended results but did lead to an unusual discovery: 13 sunken vehicles.

In a story first reported on by the New York Times, the Bosque County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 15 began a three-day search of Lake Whitney, located on the Brazos River, northwest of Waco. Deputies received a tip that the remains of a man named John Creech may be located in the flood control reservoir.

Acting on the tip, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Water Search and Rescue Team was brought in and conducted a sonar search of various locations of the lake. The team discovered 13 submerged vehicles.

Because of the depth at which the vehicles were located and other factors, a team of dive specialists called Adventures With Purpose was brought in to aid with recovery.

The Adventures With Purpose team is comprised of highly skilled divers who conduct searches for missing persons across the country.

Two of the 13 vehicles were removed from the water in an area near Soldiers Bluff. The vehicles were recovered from depths of 40 and 65 feet.

Six other vehicles were searched but their conditions made removal impossible.

The investigation into Creech’s disappearance continues, and there was no other information immediately available on how any of the 13 vehicles wound up in the reservoir.

Anyone with information on Creech’s disappearance is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 254-435-2362 or send an email to tips@bosquesheriff.com.
