DALLAS — Rhett Lashlee is returning to SMU as head football coach, according to Director of Athletics Rick Hart. Lashlee previously served as offensive coordinator for the Mustangs, including during the 2019 season.

"As with previous transitions, our process was thorough and competitive. Ultimately, though, our conversations kept leading us back to one man — Rhett Lashlee," said Hart. "Rhett's ability to connect with recruits, his passion and love for his players and his alignment with our vision and values are among the many reasons he has been selected to lead SMU Football. We will provide Rhett with the support and resources he needs to bring a championship to the Hilltop, and are thrilled to welcome Rhett back to SMU."

The news comes after the Associated Press reported SMU’s current head football coach Sonny Dykes is set to be introduced as TCU’s new coach. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because there were no official announcements from TCU, but TCU plans to hold a news conference Tuesday “for a major announcement regarding the TCU football program.”

"I am humbled and excited to be returning to SMU to lead Dallas' College Football Team," said Lashlee. "I want to thank President Turner, Rick Hart and the members of the search committee for this opportunity. My family and I look forward to engaging the community and continuing to strengthen the program's ties to the city. On the field, we want to build on the foundation of success we've established and compete for — and win — championships."

Lashlee, a two-time finalist for the Broyles Award, presented to the nation's top assistant coach, comes back to the Hilltop after two seasons as the Miami Hurricanes' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Prior to Miami, Lashlee helped lead the Mustangs to a 10-3 finish in 2019, guiding an offense that ranked No. 7 in FBS in scoring (41.8 points per game), No. 13 in passing offense (309 yards per game), No. 9 in total offense (489.8 yards per game) and No. 12 in first downs gained (322).

Prior to joining SMU's staff, Lashlee served as an offensive coordinator for seven seasons, spending 2017 at UConn, 2013-16 at Auburn, 2012 at Arkansas State and 2011 at Samford.

Lashlee graduated from Arkansas in 2006 with a degree in marketing and business administration. He received his master's degree in higher education from Auburn in 2009.
