TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas — Austin-Travis County is warning residents of snakebites after treating two pediatric patients in two days. The most recent incident took place Monday afternoon at Pace Bend Park in Spicewood, Texas. ATCEMS medics, the Pedernales Fire Department and STAR Flight were on scene to help.
To prevent snake bites, here are a couple tips provided by Travis County EMS.
- Do not try to pick up or trap a snake. Never handle a venomous snake, even a dead one.
- Snakes can hide in burrows, under debris, around water, tall grass and logs.
- If you run into a snake, freeze and back away slowly. Snakes tend to retreat if left unbothered.
- Snake proof trousers, pants and heavy footwear will help protect you.
If a snake does bite you, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Antivenom is used to treat snake bites and the sooner you can get it started, the less irreversible damage you may have.
Travis County EMS says to take a picture of the snake once you are in a safe location because identifying the snake can help with treatment.
While you are waiting for medical help, wash the bite with soap and water and cover with clean, dry dressing.
