TEXAS — Following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, Afghan nationals and their families are seeking refuge in America. The incoming Afghans have applied to the Special Immigrant Visa program - which is meant for Afghans who were employed by or on behalf of the U.S. government - to qualify to be resettled across the United States.

Roughly 30,000 Afghans will be resettled in the United States in the upcoming weeks, according to Refugee Services of Texas. Many of them will be temporarily housed at Fort Bliss in El Paso.

The agency said Texas will resettle 324 Afghans in Houston, Austin, Fort Worth and Dallas in the coming weeks.

Charities across the country are looking to the community to help the refugees in various ways. Here’s where you can donate:

Baitumaal

Baitumaal is working with resources in Afghanistan to provide emergency humanitarian aid for displaced people fleeing civil unrest.

Catholic Charities

Making a donation with Catholic Charities will help Afghan refugees as they resettle into our communities. The money will go toward shelter, clothing, food, household goods and more.

Church World Service

The organization has helped resettled more than 7,000 Afghan SIV recipients in the last decade. Donations here will help provide employment and other social services to the refugees.

International Rescue Committee

Donations to the committee help provide medical care, mobile clinics, food, emergency kits and temporary shelters to families and kids in need. The IRC has been in Afghanistan for over three decades of crisis to meet the needs of the people there.

RAICES Texas

This nonprofit agency provides free and low-cost legal services to immigrant families and refugees. Donations here allow the staff to provide client services to those in need in the community.

The UN Refugee Agency

The UN Refugee Agency is asking the community to help donate and provide emergency shelter, clean water, food and medicine to the incoming refugees. Donations will help as supplies stretch thin.
