TEXAS — The race for Texas attorney general is ramping up to be the state's most-watched of 2022. Republican incumbent Ken Paxton already has two high profile primary challengers – Land Commissioner George P. Bush and former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman.

Guzman spoke with Capital Tonight Monday about her underdog campaign. She’s behind her two primary opponents in recent polling and fundraising but has garnered the support of some of the state's top GOP donors, even some who have jumped ship from Paxton. But Paxton did get the coveted endorsement of former President Donald Trump.

“Texans want to decide for themselves what lawyer they should hire and I hope that when Texans look at our records, our experience, the integrity and the judgment as a leader, as a judge, my judgment speaks for itself,” Guzman said. “If you look at the candidates in this race you have to question how well they’ve used the judgment that’s been entrusted to them by the people of Texas.”

Paxton’s legal troubles have been brought up by both Guzman and Bush. The incumbent is facing both an FBI investigation into claims he abused his office to help a wealthy donor, and a long-running securities fraud indictment. He’s denied wrongdoing in both.

“The first thing I want to tackle is really bringing integrity into the process, taking a deep dive into the work of the attorney general’s office,” she said.

Guzman said her experience in this race is unmatched with 22 years as a judge and 10 years as an attorney.

“Every issue the attorney general has brought in the state Supreme Court over the last 12 years, I have decided whether those issues are correct or not,” she said.
