TEXAS — Eva Guzman, a former Republican member of the Texas Supreme Court, has officially announced that she is running for Texas attorney general.

On June 7, 2021, Guzman announced her resignation from the Texas Supreme Court, prompting speculation that she would be seeking another office. On June 14, The Texas Tribune reported that Guzman had filed paperwork with the Texas Ethics Commission in preparation for a run for Texas Attorney General.

Guzman is one of seven children of Mexican immigrant parents. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1979. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston, a J.D degree from South Texas College of Law in Houston, and an LL.M. degree from Duke University School of Law.

Guzman was the first Latina elected statewide in Texas. Before her appointment to the state supreme court, she was a justice on Houston's Fourteenth court of appeals.

She faces at least two rivals in the GOP primary, including incumbent Attorney General Ken Paxton and Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush. Guzman would be the first Latina to hold that office.
