LAREDO, Texas — State troopers found 105 migrants crammed into the back of a semi-truck during a traffic stop conducted on U.S. Route 59 in Webb County on Monday.
The driver of the truck is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations. The DPS Criminal Investigation Division is also assisting this case.
Last month, Texas Gov. Abbott announced a new crackdown on illegal border crossings into Texas. He announced that those who crossed into the state illegally will be subject to arrest and confinement for trespassing. This builds upon Operation Lone Star launched in March by Gov. Abbott to continue DPS presence at the southern border to combat the smuggling of people and drugs into Texas.
Despite the uptick in migrant border crossings, the majority of migrants continue to be turned away from entering the U.S.
