WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas — A multinational conglomerate may be looking to expand in Texas, and for once, the destination is neither Austin nor Dallas-Fort Worth.
Samsung Electronics, which is headquartered in Seoul, Korea, has applied for tax breaks to potentially build a $17 billion U.S. chip factory in Williamson County. The company already has an existing chip plant in Austin.
Once the company confirms an investment plan, Samsung hopes to start construction by 2022 and finish the plant by the end of 2024.
Williamson County is the home of Taylor Independent School District, to which Samsung Electronics filed for its tax break, according to documents. Samsung’s application also says this new plant will create at least 1,800 new, high-paying jobs. The plant would be a manufacturing facility for semiconductors.
The company is also considering Arizona, New York and sites in South Korea as well.
