FORT BLISS, Texas — For the second time in less than a year, a U.S. Army soldier stationed at Fort Bliss has died.

According to military officials, Pvt. Marriah Pouncy, 20, on Monday, June 21 was found unresponsive in her barracks and was later pronounced dead.

Army officials said the circumstances surrounding her death are being investigated but it’s not believed that foul play was involved.

Pouncy’s death comes seven months after the death of 19-year-old Pfc. Asia Graham, who was also found unresponsive in her barracks. The military attributed her death to a drug overdose.

El Paso media Thursday reported Pouncy and Graham had been in a relationship and were to be married.

Graham had earlier reported being sexually assaulted by a fellow soldier. He was convicted last week.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and fellow soldiers of Pvt. Marriah Pouncy. Pvt. Pouncy was a committed soldier, friend, and valued member of the Iron Eagle Team. Her loss is not just felt within our formation, but across the Army,” said Col. Geoffrey Whittenberg, 1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade commander

Pouncy, a human resources specialist, was from Arizona and arrived at Fort Bliss in 2019 after completing a tour of duty in South Korea.
