SAN ANTONIO — An investigation is underway after a U.S. Army drill sergeant was shot and killed in San Antonio.

According to Joint Base San Antonio- Fort Sam Houston, Staff Sgt. Jessica Mitchell, a dental specialist, was pronounced dead at University Hospital San Antonio about 3 a.m. on January 1.

Mitchell had been assigned to the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence since August 2019.

The hospital notified the Army that Mitchell was the victim of multiple gunshot wounds. She had been on holiday leave at the time of the shooting.

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Drill Sergeant Jessica Mitchell. Our sincere condolences go out to her family and friends. We are focused on supporting Drill Sergeant Mitchell’s family as well as her soldiers during this extremely difficult time,” Maj. Gen. Dennis LeMaster, the MEDCoE Commanding General, wrote in a news release.
