AUSTIN, Texas — The home of one of Texas’s favorite veterans is now a historic landmark.

Austin City Council approved the historical designation for Richard Overton's home at its regular meeting on Thursday. It will now be harder to alter or tear down the home. Overton's family pushed for the designation.

Overton died December 27, 2018 after battling pneumonia at age 112. At the time, he was the oldest World War II veteran and the oldest man in the country.
Overton reportedly bought the property on 2011 Hamilton Ave in 1948 and built a one-story home for himself and his second wife.

Overton enjoyed smoking cigars on his front porch. Each year people gathered at the East Austin home to celebrate his birthday.
