1. On border visit in Texas, Biden says it's time for Congress to 'step up' and pass border reform

In a highly anticipated trip to the border in Brownsville, Texas, on Thursday, President Joe Biden called on Congress to “set politics aside” and pass a bipartisan border policy deal that died earlier this month amid GOP opposition swiftly after its long-awaited unveiling. 

“They desperately need more resources. I’ll say it again — they desperately need more resources,” Biden said. “They need more agents, more officers, more judges, more equipment in order to secure our border.” 

“Folks, it’s time for us to move on this. We can’t wait any longer,” he declared. 

2. Texas prosecutor is fined for allowing murder charges against a woman who self-managed an abortion

A Texas prosecutor has been disciplined for allowing murder charges to be filed against a woman who self-managed an abortion in a case that sparked national outrage.

Starr County District Attorney Gocha Ramirez agreed to pay a $1,250 fine and have his license held in a probated suspension for 12 months in a settlement reached with the State Bar of Texas. Ramirez will be able to continue practicing law as long as he complies with the terms of the January settlement, which was first reported by news outlets on Thursday.

3. Federal judge pauses Texas law that lets police arrest migrants who enter U.S. illegally

A federal judge on Thursday granted a preliminary injunction that puts the brakes on a Texas law that lets police arrest migrants who enter the U.S. illegally.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 4 into law in December. The law also gives local judges the authority to order migrants to leave the country. The law tests the limits of how far a state can go to enforce immigration laws.
