DALLAS — If one were to ask a resident, they’d likely say the Fair Park area of Dallas is packed with culture and history. And with the Texas Commission on the Arts’ recent distinction, Fair Park now sits along other communities across the state designated as a cultural district.

  • Fair Park has become the third community in Dallas named a cultural district by the Texas Commission on the Arts, joining Deep Ellum and the Arts District

  • The TCA also announced earlier this month two more districts, including Laredo Cultural District and Westside Cultural District in San Antonio

  • There are currently 51 cultural districts across the state, according to the TCA

Fair Park joins 50 other places in Texas, including the newly-added Laredo Cultural District and the Westside Cultural District in San Antonio — all announced on Sept. 9. According to the TCA, cultural districts are “special zones that harness the power of cultural resources to stimulate economic development and community vitality.” In its newsletter, the TCA went on to say that the cultural districts are typically “focal points for generating business, attracting tourists, stimulating cultural development and fostering civic pride.”

In Fair Park First’s application, historical places such as the Juanita Craft Civil Rights House, the South Dallas Cultural Center and the Forest Theater were featured. Additionally, neighborhoods such as Jubilee Park, Queen City and South Boulevard Park Row were included along with the murals, public art installations, museums and architecture found around the community.
