Deep moisture is in place across much of Texas Wednesday evening. But the atmosphere has a warm layer at the middle levels—a cap on convective development. So far, storms have been limited to northeast Texas.

Heading into Thursday, an upper disturbance is expected to pass over north Texas in the pre-dawn hours. This will likely spark a few potentially severe storms in the DFW area for the morning commute. Some of these storms could be severe with large hail, damaging winds and an isolated tornado.

Light showers are expected from Waco southward in the morning hours.

The afternoon will bring a brief break in the storm chances and some clearing skies. This will allow temperatures into the 70s for North Texas, upper 80s for central areas and 90s from San Antonio southward.

The strongest part of the upper system will pass overhead Friday and early Saturday with rounds of storms. Some will be severe.

A cold front sweeps southward by Saturday afternoon, bring a late season chill to most of Texas. By Sunday morning, north Texas could see some upper 30s with low 40s in Central Texas and 50s to the south.
