SAN ANTONIO – The long-awaited gender reveal of Tupi, a capybara at the San Antonio Zoo that has received quite a lot of social media attention, was on Wednesday morning.
The capybaras in the habitat pulled down a tarp with the announcement reading, “Ahoy! It’s a boy!”
Tupi was born on Dec. 3, 2024, and he is the first capybara to be born at the zoo in 24 years.
The reason why the gender wasn’t revealed until four months after Tupi’s birth is due to the fact that capybaras don’t show visible signs of its sex until a mature age, according to the San Diego Zoo. This is true for other rodent species as well.
Tupi quickly took the internet by storm as fans around the world liked and viewed videos of the adorable baby posted by the San Antonio Zoo.
The gender reveal event was free for members, and through standard admission for nonmembers.
This year, the San Antonio Zoo ranked in the top 10 best zoos in the country, according to Condé Nast Traveler.
