SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Zoo announced the death of its 57-year-old Asian elephant, Karen, on Tuesday afternoon.
Karen died under the care of the veterinarians and her animal care staff. The animal came to the San Antonio Zoo in 2016 and joined a trio of two other girl elephants, together known as the “Golden Girls.” She outlived the average lifespan of an Asian elephant, which is 47.5 years, according to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
The San Antonio Zoo described Karen as a sassy and mischievous elephant who kept visitors and staff smiling.
