TEXAS — The violence at the nation’s Capitol on Wednesday has many officials stepping up to denounce such acts against democracy, including Republicans who have supported President Donald Trump continuously throughout his term.
Republican Texas Rep. Michael McCaul recorded a video for Twitter from his office while rioters entered Capitol Hill and lawmakers were forced to seek shelter.

“This violence cannot stand. It has to stop. We need to do our job here in the congress and not incite this violence outside,” McCaul says in the video.
Congress was working to discuss disputes against the presidential election when the chaos ensued. The group also has an official vote to finalize electrical ballots on the schedule. Trump had spoken to a group of his supports near the Capitol just moments before, encouraging them to march to support the vote, which resulted in people breaking windows to enter the building and inhibiting Congress’s proceedings.
Trump, the first president to lose a re-election bid in almost 30 years, has attributed his defeat to widespread voter fraud, despite the consensus of nonpartisan election officials and even Trump’s attorney general that there was none.
Of the roughly 50 lawsuits the president and his allies have filed challenging election results, nearly all have been dismissed or dropped. He’s also lost twice at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Despite the losses, 11 Republicans formed a coalition to overturn the election elections, but eventually were silenced when proceedings resumed following the riots. Texas Democrats have now called for Sen. Ted Cruz to resign, as he headed the coalition himself.
Trump has also announced that an orderly transition will happen, seemingly accepting defeat for the first time since November 3.
